How Technology’s Advancement in Mass Media has Changed Society’s Expectation and Culture
Technological advancements in mass media have changed society’s
expectations in several ways. One example is the expectation that news and
current events be released immediately, as the new happens. Prior to the
internet and social media, events were released as soon as possible. News was
reported on television or printed in the paper. The Attack on the New
York Trade Center (9/11) was reported almost immediately on news broadcasts
everywhere. Days after 09/11/2001, details and photos regarding the attack were
reported and shown in newspapers and news magazines. I can still remember the
Time Magazine article showing the sad an unfortunate image of a person falling
from one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York. “The photo was published in newspapers around the U.S.
in the days after the attacks, but backlash from readers forced it into
temporary obscurity.” (Photo, 2016)
Today, because of technological advancements such as the internet and
social media, reporting of an incident such as the attack on 9/11 would likely
be shown and reported in real time. That is to say, because of social media we
would have likely seen much more of the attack as it happened instead of after
it happened, possibly even the live event of the man falling. Real-time is now
the normal expectation that the public has regarding news and current events.
