Social Media as a Primary News Source

Another example of how technology has changed society's expectations of mass media and culture is the expectation that news and information be posted on social media. During the 2020 pandemic, much of the news and current events regarding the disease was updated by the mass media via social media. The public relied on updates from various social media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook to get vital information regarding testing supplies and testing centers, COVID-19 hospitalizations and ultimately how and where vaccines could be obtained.  Given the nature of the pandemic, social media helped share the news quickly and efficiently with the public.

There is now an expectation that most news and current events are posted on social media. Many individuals consider social media a primary source for news and current events from the mass media. Most people have smart phones or other mobile devices that allow for easy access of news and current events. Unfortunately, just as accurate news was shared via social media regarding the pandemic, inaccurate news was also shared via social media. There was so much information being shared and exchanged so quickly, sometimes it was difficult for the public to recognize what was factual and what was not.
