Technology has greatly changed society’s expectations of mass media and culture. Ther is now an expectation that news and current events be released immediately, as the new happens. Prior to the internet and social media, events were released as soon as possible. 30 years ago, news was primarily reported on television or printed in the paper. T oday, because of technological advancements such as the internet and social media, journalist are able to report in real time. While it is beneficial to have news instantaneously, this can also create time constraints for the journalist. There is added pressure on the journalist to post the news story first. Training for the Communicator

Image
Modern communicators need to be trained to be proficient in the use of social media. The use of social media calls for creativity in communications to keep users interested. It is beneficial to create social media pages that will invite users to read the information posted on the specific social media outlet. Instagram is a place where communicators can post and share photos with fellow users. Not only is this an effective way to pass on news, but pictures also sometimes make a greater impact than just words. Use of Twitter can also be thought provoking for many readers. Short, abbreviated statements and comments can invite comments from others and encourage conversations. Social media is now a primary source of news and information and therefore, journalists would benefit from specialized training in the use of social media for posting news stories and current events.

Social Media is another tool of technology that has changed the work of communicators. Like the internet, social media has redefined the limits of communication. The internet allows individuals to communicate worldwide. Social media is the tool communicators now use to share current events, news and information, and opinions with a vast number of readers and followers.  “ In 2005, about 7 percent of American adults used social media. But by 2017, 80 percent of American adults used Facebook alone. ”  (Dizikes, 2020)    Through social media, the delivery of news and information has changed from newspapers and news magazines to social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. Gone are the days of waiting for the newspaper to be delivered to our front door to be updated on the latest news stories and current events. Now we can pick up our mobile phones and receive instant information and updates. “ According to Zhong, social media is a type of computer-media...

Digital Communication and the Internet

Image
Digital Technology has changed the work of communicators in several ways. One tool of technology is the internet. The internet has helped redefine communication as we know it. “The internet has made communication easier and faster, it’s allowed us to say in contact with people regardless of time and location.” (Rogers, 2019) Through the internet, the audience for communicators has expanded from local to worldwide. Mobile devices are also a tool of technology that has changed the work of communicators. Prior to smart phones, communication was limited to the use of the land-line telephones and snail mail. With the internet and now the use of smart phones, communication expanded and is now faster than ever before. Today’s journalist can use the internet and their cell phones to share a story, research information and take and share pictures of the event as it happens. E-mails and videos are also common sources of communication for the journalist and the ordinary citizen. Referen...

The Importance of the Facts

Technological Advances in mass media has impacted our culture.   There are so many positives to the technological advances in mass media that have occurred over the past 30 years. Specifically, social media has opened the door to so many options in communication. News is shared and exchanged at such a rapid pace, and we updated about so many events and so fast. Unfortunately, this rapid exchange of information has led to the release of some misinformation.     Prior to social media, when news happened, there was time to verify facts and sources prior to the story being released in print or on the local news. Today, because of social media a lot of information is posted before it is verified.   As a result, so much misinformation is taken as truth because it has been posted and shared and exchanged before it is verified. One example of this happening was during the 2020 elections. Election results were being posted from different sources without fact checking...

Social Media as a Primary News Source

Image
Another example of how technology has changed society's expectations of mass media and culture is the expectation that news and information be posted on social media. During the 2020 pandemic, much of the news and current events regarding the disease was updated by the mass media via social media. The public relied on updates from various social media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook to get vital information regarding testing supplies and testing centers, COVID-19 hospitalizations and ultimately how and where vaccines could be obtained.   Given the nature of the pandemic, social media helped share the news quickly and efficiently with the public. There is now an expectation that most news and current events are posted on social media. Many individuals consider social media a primary source for news and current events from the mass media. Most people have smart phones or other mobile devices that allow for easy access of news and current events. Un...

I Want to Know Right Now!!! Technological advancements in mass media have changed society’s expectations in several ways. One example is the expectation that news and current events be released immediately, as the new happens. Prior to the internet and social media, events were released as soon as possible. News was reported on television or printed in the paper.  The Attack on the New York Trade Center (9/11) was reported almost immediately on news broadcasts everywhere. Days after 09/11/2001, details and photos regarding the attack were reported and shown in newspapers and news magazines. I can still remember the Time Magazine article showing the sad an unfortunate image of a person falling from one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York.   “The photo was published in newspapers around the U.S. in the days after the attacks, but backlash from readers forced it into temporary obscurity.”  (Photo, 2016) Today, because of technological advancements ...
